How Patrick Got Started In Video Editing

When my Grandfather asked me to help him edit, direct, and market his videos in 2019, I didn't know what to do. While working out a strategy with my Grandfather, my mind kept wandering to what new musicians (in my opinion) do. In my mind, new and old musicians, focus on making connections and collaborations. So, that was a clue that we should base his show on interviewing other people. Another observation I have made, is that musicians focus on creating new albums and then releasing it all at once, rather than constantly releasing singles. After a musician gets big and famous, I notice they tend to release a lot more singles and collaborations rather than full albums. This was a clue for us to create our first season and then release each episode on a schedule. This way we can have something posted with an expected period of no new content. This will give us a grace period to create new content. Once we start to hit our subscriber, view, comment, and like goals we will start to release "singles." When we do that we control our level of exposure with achievable goals. Our goal with our show is to talk to other people about any extreme life transformations in hopes to build a tiny community to talk about healing and transformation.

Another thing I noticed about musicians is the content of the music. In my opinion, its most of the time related to social status, record labels, and presentation. For us, this meant that we needed to look the part in our social media set up. We knew right away we needed a fixture of some sorts to make a statement for us. We found the Nanoleaf (Wi-Fi Alexa Light-Up Tiles) and turned it into a triangle to symbolize the strongest structure. This light fixture is known to move to the tone of your voice, so it can amplify the speakers meaning.

The next thing we needed was the filming equipment. We purchased a 4k video camera to fight for the future bare minimum video quality in production. I found a Canon EOS M50 mirrorless camera and a TAKSTAR SGC-598 microphone. This is a unidirectional microphone intended for interviews that attaches to the top of our Canon camera. I found two black photography umbrellas with reflective linings and two shorter white photography umbrellas. Purchasing all of these things would achieve our goal of "looking the part," we're using the same things that famous YouTube personalities are using.

I use my brothers’ beats, he’s a young music producer. This will allow me to create a group effort and a family project. He makes a new beat for me for each video that we produce. After some time, we hope to make him the camera man. His beats are in the genre dubstep, lo-fi, techno, and dance. They tend to have low frequencies and I found that perfect for what we're filming

The next thing I needed to get was the proper video editing software. I did research and found Adobe Premiere to be the most reliable. We didn't need the fancy stuff, so, we just needed Adobe Premiere Elements. This meant we don't need to purchase a license every year. One obstacle we came across was the grain in the raw video footage. We resolved that issue by reducing the ISO on the camera and purchasing Neat Video (an Adobe plug-in that makes it look official movie quality).
